Thoughts: Scottish Album of the Year Award

Every description I’ve read thus far is calling this Scotland’s answer to the Mercury Music Prize, and whilst I think it’s fantastic for Scottish music to be given the opportunity to be honoured in a similar way, I wish the parallels were a little more subtle and that this didn’t seem as much to be emanating from the shadow of something massive - but rather as something massive in it’s own right. I hope the attempted prestige-by-association is successful, in order that in later years it becomes known absolutely in its own right, and it can shake off the ‘Scotland’s Mercury’ tag it already seems to be developing.

From an organisational standpoint, it couldn’t have come at a better time, following the rise to promenince of the independence debate, the biggest Celtic Connections festival to date earlier this year and an increasing focus on Scottish artists from across the atlantic (see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0100q6v for more), it really is the ideal time to be launching this venture, and I wish them the very best with it as it has the potential to be something very good indeed.

Design work is pretty sweet, too.
